What kind of vote is this?
Procedure COD
Ordinary legislative procedure
This is EU law in the making. The Parliament and the Council, where the governments of the member states sit, decide together on a proposal from the European Commission. Both have to agree on exactly the same text.
What happens next
If this was the Parliament's first position, negotiations with the Council usually follow. If the text had already been agreed with the Council, it becomes law once the Council confirms it and it is published in the Official Journal of the EU.
Follow the file on the Parliament's Legislative Observatory ↗A vote on an amendment
An amendment is a proposed change to part of a text. This vote decided on that change only, not on the text as a whole.
How a vote passes
Most votes pass with a simple majority: more votes for than against. Abstentions don't count either way. Some decisions, for example certain budget votes, need a larger majority.
